Coaches & Officials

THANK YOU to each and every one of our coaches throughout the NWT!! It is your TIME, ENERGY, and ENTHUSIASM that you share with every skater that makes our sport AWESOME!

Speed Skating NWT is committed to coaches and officials development. Coaches are encouraged to register in The Locker, the Coaching Association of Canada‘s central location to easily access, manage, and maintain coach training and records. Both coaches and officials are encouraged to register through the IceReg platform: https://icereg.ca/#!/.

Training opportunities are identified through Sport North Federation, Speed Skating Canada, and the National Coaching Certification Association. New coaches are often paired with experienced high performance coaches during the NWT Championships to foster an environment of mentorship. For officials, training is generally offered in the days leading up to the NWT Championships to assure that all officials are trained in the area that they will be volunteering.

Annually, Speed Skating NWT supports having an experienced certified coach travel to community clubs to deliver development camps for athletes as well as coach and official mentoring. These annual development camps are financially supported through the Regional Youth Sports Event (RYSE) Program.

For coaches and officials who are interested in pursuing level 2 and higher certifications, Speed Skating NWT supports them in traveling to obtain further training in southern Canada. Traveling to the south allows coaches and officials to learn from others at their level, hear about innovative training, and gain inspiration from different parts of the country.

Funding Opportunities:

They Can Coach Grant – Sport North offers this coach development grant to support NWT coaches in attending customized professional development and education opportunities that will enhance their skills and abilities.

Officials Development Bursaries – Speed Skating Canada offers this official development bursary for level 2 and 3 officials to support experiences that contribute to development and considerations for upgrades.
