Speed Skating NWT supports athletes pursuing their goals to the highest level of their abilities.
At the beginning of each season, coaches work with athletes to select competitions that will help them work towards their goals. The 2024-2025 Alberta competition calendar and the national competition calendar will be shared once available.
Speed Skating NWT believes it is very important to support community Clubs and athletes. As such, they support NWT athletes to attend competitions in southern Canada by offering administrative support and Travel Funding.
Sport North Federation’s Rising Star program is intended to provide athletes with financial assistance to participate in sport specific summer camps which contribute to their learning and development. You can apply here.
The Department of Municipal and Community Affairs’ High Performance Athlete Grant provides funding for high performance athletes from the NWT to assist with the costs associated with training and competing in their chosen sport. You can apply here.
Speed Skating NWT has a history of high performance athletes, who have graduated from local programs to join the National Training Centres in Calgary and Montreal. Speed Skating NWT alumni, who have competed nationally and internationally, include Michael Gilday (Team Canada – 2014 Sochi Olympics), Hannah Clark (Olympic Oval Elite Athlete Pathway), Wren Acorn (Team Canada Next Gen Member), Braeden Picek (Olympic Oval Elite Athlete Pathway), and Luke Dizon (Olympic Oval Elite Athlete Pathway). When athletes achieve this level, Speed Skating NWT continues to support their training and competition through administrative and financial support.
