As part of a national commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive sport environment, Speed Skating NWT and Speed Skating Canada are partnering on the launch the Safe Sport Speak Up Line, a new independent reporting mechanism that supports the intake and management of complaints from all speed skating participants, including those in the Northwest Territories.
The Safe Sport Speak Up Line can be used by all past and present participants involved with Speed Skating NWT and it’s member clubs, including athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers. Items that can be reported include governance disputes, non-compliance with organizational policies, and conduct or behaviour that results or has the potential to result in physical or psychological harm, including but not limited to, maltreatment, abuse of authority, bullying, harassment and discrimination.
The Safe Sport Speak Up Line is accessible online and by telephone. Complaints can be raised through the third-party hotline – on a confidential basis, with or without anonymity – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (including weekends and holidays).

Reports submitted via the Safe Sport Speak Up Line are sent to an external Case Manager to ensure an independent review. The Case Manager will use the platform’s private and secure internal messaging system to communicate as needed and will determine next steps based on the type of complaint and the individuals and/or organizations involved.
A report should be submitted to the Office of the Sport Integrity Commissioner (OSIC) only if it relates to a Universal Code of Conduct to Prevent and Address Maltreatment in Sport (UCCMS) violation and if the person who is alleged to have committed the violation is a UCCMS participant as identified in Speed Skating Canada’s Code of Conduct. This includes National and NextGen team athletes and training partners; National Program coaches; and Speed Skating Canada staff and Board members.
If the report does not meet both requirements listed above, the Safe Sport Speak Up Line should be used to submit a report. If still unsure where to submit the report, the independent Case Manager can identify and redirect complaints that should be sent to OSIC.
